NEW ULAANBAATAR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO BE JOINTLY MANAGED
- 2018-01-03
The New Ulaanbaatar International Airport is likely to be inaugurated in 2019. Government officials led by the Minister first oversaw the progress of the 32,2 km highway leading to the airport. Construction work of Mongolia’s first highway connecting the airport with UIaanbaatar began last spring with a USD 140 million soft loan provided by the Export-Import Bank of China. The highway construction is 54.2 percent and expected to complete by October this year.
The airport contains more than 30 components or buildings such as runway, taxiway, apron, independent thermal and power stations, water and sewage plant, fire station, cargo facility, aircraft fuel hydrant system, earthquake resistant air traffic control tower and flood barrage.
All main facilities have been built at the airport except for some pending works including the construction of a hangar and a garage for the vehicles of passengers and airport staff worth about USD 40 million. Minister J.Bat-Erdene informed that a Mongolia-Japan joint management team is planned to be established with the ratio 49:51. In 2008, the Government of Mongolia received a USD 500 million soft loan from the Japanese Government to finance the construction of the new airport. As the moratorium period ends this year, Mongolia will repay MNT 20 billion in 2018. While the Chinggis Khaan International Airport received 1.2 million passengers in 2017, the new airport has annual capacity of 3 million passengers.
